Dr. Keith Martin has worked tirelessly for the last 15 years as your M.P. He has led on numerous issues important to Canadians like you including:

 

Effectiveness for our Community

• Successfully advocated for the E&N railway to be transferred to the Island

Corridor Foundation

• Ensured that our community received federal funds for dozens of projects and programs (e.g. View Royal storm drain upgrades, Sooke's sewer system; employment programs - Work Link, Spectrum Job Search, Summer Jobs; events - Canada Day Celebrations, community festivals, Police Camp, etc.)

• In the last year alone, our community has received over $30-million in infrastructure funding for projects that Keith has advocated for

• The only MP calling for a much needed, cost-benefit analysis on the $1.2 billion sewage treatment proposal, which at present design, will not improve our water quality, but will add $500 or more in new taxes to every household every year

• Has the highest output of any MP on Vancouver Island

• Has had the lowest travel expenses of any MP west of Ontario for 14 years

 

Environment

• Created an all-party conservation caucus to protect critical habitats and improve our environment

• Took a leadership role in protecting our fish hatcheries including our local Goldstream hatchery

 

Health

• Developed an integrated plan to address homelessness and substance abuse in our community

• Successfully got Parliament to support a national mental health care strategy

• Is pursuing a national health care workforce strategy to address the critical deficit we have in doctors, nurses, and other health care workers - 1/3 of our community does not have a family doctor

• Successfully saw the adoption of his solutions to improve our organ donation system

• Successfully advocated for the construction of the Access Health Centre in Victoria

• Working with community members to address the problems with cell phone/transmission towers

• Working with the Canadian Cancer Society and others to tackle various cancers including colon, prostate and ovarian cancer.

• Working with national associations to reduce the incidence of diabetes

• Worked to fight needless restrictions on natural health products

 

Our Rights

• Took the leadership role in Parliament in protecting our freedom of speech through reigning in our commissions

 

Affordable Housing

• Working with all levels of government and across party lines to fight for a plan that will build affordable housing in our community

 

Education

• Has developed a plan to reduce the debt burden and tuition fees on students and improve access to post secondary skills training

 

Defence

• Wrote a substantial part of the plan that brought parties together over our mission in Afghanistan by focussing on the development and diplomatic initiatives that are missing

• Is working with local partners to create a center of excellence for the health of our Canadian Forces

• Has submitted a plan to the Department of National Defence for better access to health care for Canadian Forces’ families

 

Lower Taxes

• Introduced legislation to give charitable donations the same tax break as a political donation

• Created Bill C-462, the Canadian Low Income Supplement, that will give more money to families who need it most

 

Jobs and the Economy

• Successfully advocated for the Orca class naval vessels to be built in Victoria

• Developed comprehensive plans to maximize our local economy

• Pushing for a long term shipbuilding strategy for our navy that will see ships built in Canada for the next twenty years

 

Seniors

• Worked with the community to get the Alexander Mackie Lodge built

• Helped to get the resources for the Ayre Manor seniors facility in Sooke

 

Why I serve...

• I entered politics as a physician to improve the health and well being of our community and our country.

• I love working hard for our community that I have been a part of for 22 years.

• It is my passion to help those who are least fortunate in our community. I see the potential that we have and I am passionate about fighting to enable us to be the best we can be.

• To work with the powerful team of bright minds that I have accumulated from our community to be a force of positive change for our citizens.
